Civil Engineer
Job Description and Details
Responsible for planning, designing and overseeing construction and maintenance of building structures and facilities at the Asphalt Plant; for preparing budgets and schedules for facilities modifications including estimates on equipment, labour, materials and other related costs.
Responsible for providing mechanical and technical expertise to achieve the required reliable performance of new and existing equipment, machines, mechanical components, hydraulic dredge machinery, and motor vehicles utilized at the Demerara Harbour Bridge; to support optimizing production processes with regard to safety, environment, reliability, quality, efficiency and regulatory requirements; provide leadership in the implementation of preventive and predictive maintenance programmes required for the mechanical integrity of equipment, machines, and motor vehicles.
DIRECTS and OVERSEES civil engineering projects to ensure that they are completed to the standards required within agreed timescales and to the agreed budget level.
PREPARES tender documents and project completion certificates.
CARRIES OUT feasibility studies for major and minor works and recommend new projects and extensions to existing projects.
CARRIES OUT any required site visits and inspections to determine the civil engineering aspects of planned works.
ANALYSES survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects.
PLANS and DESIGNS transportation or hydraulic systems and structures, following construction and government standards, using design software and drawing tools.
COMPUTES load and grade requirements, water flow rates, material stress factors to determine design specifications.
INSPECTS project sites to monitor progress and ENSURES conformance to design specifications and safety or sanitation standards.
ADVISES on the purchase of plant and machinery to ensure that it is appropriate for the purposes intended.
LIAISES with other professionals and staff involved in engineering projects to ensure that there is effective overall coordination.
DIRECTS construction operations, and maintenance activities at project site.
DIRECTS or PARTICIPATES in surveying to lay out installations and ESTABLISHES reference points, grades, and elevations to guide construction.
ESTIMATES quantities and cost of materials, equipment, or labour to determine project feasibility.
PREPARES reports on the civil engineering aspects of projects to ensure that decisions are based on the best possible information and take account of all resource implications and time and budget constraints.
PREPARES or PRESENTS public reports, such as bid proposals, deeds, environmental impact statements, and property and right-of-way descriptions.
TESTS soils and materials to determine the adequacy and strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt, or steel.
MAINTAINS knowledge of modern civil engineering techniques and processes and recommend any new systems that will enhance the effectiveness of the civil engineering function.
